Can Diets High In Soluble Fiber Prevent Weight Gain?

A new study granted the world with some amazing findings recently, regarding our eating habits and weight gain. The study, published in the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology found that diets high in soluble fiber may prevent weight gain.

The Research

The findings were based on results from a research performed on mice. The animals were fed a diet that lacked soluble fiber, which led to poor gut health and weight gain.
The results suggest that diets high in soluble fiber may prevent future weight gains, and in the same time they may promote good gut health.

The mice were fed a series of diets that varied in levels of soluble and insoluble fiber, proteins and fat.

The diet high in soluble fiber proved to be of most help to the human body regarding weight gain.

The team working on the study said that “adding soluble fiber to one’s regular diet may promote good gut health and regulate weight by triggering the production of SCFAs (short-chain fatty acids).”

But how does soluble fiber exactly work?
The fiber absorbs water in the gut, which forms a gel-like substance. That substance then binds to cholesterol and bile acids, and thus eliminates them from the body. It can also slow digestion and regulate blood sugar levels.

Which foods are rich in soluble fiber?
Barley, oat bran, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas, and certain types of fruit and vegetables (such as carrots, blueberries, apples) are all high in soluble fiber. By implementing them into your diet regime you can keep that weight gain at bay.
