18 Foods You Must Never Give To Your Dog

1. Chocolate

We’re starting out with the most famous one. Unfortunately for our four-legged buddies, chocolate contains chemical called Theobromine, a natural stimulant found in the cocoa bean. Turns out Theobromine is pretty toxic to dogs, especially to smaller breeds. Signs of chocolate poisoning include: panting, excessive thirst, diarrhea, vomiting, tremors, seizures, and hyperactivity.

2. Grapes

You would be surprised how dangerous these tiny treats can actually be to canines. Even in the smallest amounts of grapes and raisins can be toxic and even fatal to your furry friend. It is a common misconception that canines should, like us humans, eat all the fruits available out there. The truth is, some fruits are actually quite toxic for them.

3. Avocados

Though avocados are delicious and pretty healthy for us humans, they could be potentially dangerous to your pet. Avocados contain the substance called Persin, which is poisonous to canines. The effects do range depending on the consumed amount, as well as on the dog’s size, but the symptoms usually include vomiting and diarrhea

4. Moldy Food

We all give our furry friend something that has gone bad, but it is quite useful to know that food which becomes moldy over time isn’t safe for your dog. Even if you throw something in the trash can, that might not be enough as canines can easily smell these unexpected treats and eat them while you are not looking. Make sure you get rid of moldy foods for good.

5. Salty Foods

Salt and salty foods are extremely dangerous to your canine pet. If consumed in “extreme moderation”, salt can is not necessarily dangerous, but if your pooch ingests large amounts of salt, the poor thing may soon develop some serious health problems. Ingesting salt will lead to excessive thirst, which will cause him to drink substantial amounts of water. Also, vomiting and diarrhea are early symptoms.

6. Milk

Many of the items you could be feeding your dog could result in him getting extremely sick, and some can even be fatal. So, before you slip your pooch another ‘forbidden fruit’ type of treat, keep in mind these 18 foods you should never give to your dog.

7. Chicken Bones

Although chicken meat is one of our favorite foods, don’t feel tempted to throw your pooch a chicken wing or leg when he gives you that look with his cute puppy eyes. The trick with chicken or turkey bones is that they are hollow and bone pieces can easily splinter off and get stuck in your dog’s mouth, throat and stomach. They are a canine choking hazard waiting to happen.

8. Garlic

Powdered or whole, garlic can be pretty dangerous to canines as it damages their red blood cells when consumed. In fact, all vegetables that are part of the Allium family are bad for your pooch. Think leeks, chives and shallots, but garlic is proven to be most dangerous when consumed, even in small doses.

9. Yeast

As a pet owner, you need to know that yeast can be quite hazardous to your pooch, especially when consumed in large amounts. The thing is that raw yeast expands when ingested, causing internal organs to react and expand as well, which can lead to major breathing problems and bowel obstruction.

10. Macadamia Nuts

The research conducted by ASPCA shows that macadamia nuts are the most poisonous nuts to canines. The typical dosage that can cause poisoning is as little as 2 grams for every 2.2 pounds of your dog’s body weight. The common symptoms include depression, tremors, fever, muscle weakness, and vomiting, and they typically appear within 12 hours from the moment of ingestion.

11. Alcohol

Though some pooches really like drinking beer after a long day of exploring, alcohol can actually cause serious damage to your dog’s nervous and respiratory systems. And not just drinks. Foods that contain alcohol are also pretty tricky, which means bread dough might lead to ethanol poisoning and eventually cause the dog to become intoxicated.

12. Peaches

Peaches, as well as apricots, are not nearly as healthy for canines as they are for us humans. The toxicity is actually not in the delicious ‘meat’ of these fruits, but in the very pit. Peach pit contains cyanide, which can be pretty deadly to your dog. While also, the roughness of pit’s exterior is also dangerous as it could get stuck in your pooch’s throat or digestive tract.

13. Lemons

In fact, all citrus type of fruit is dangerous to canines, so make sure you keep your pooch away from these delicious green and yellow treats. And not just dogs. If you have a horse or a cat, keep them away from citrus fruit as well. Lemon, for example, contains psoralen and aromatic oils, both of which are toxic to dogs.

14. Chewing Gum

You probably think – ok, it common knowledge that nobody should eat chewing, for it is, after all, made of gum – but contrary to popular belief, it is not the actual gum that is dangerous to dogs. The toxicity lies in the artificial sweetener called Xylitol, also found in toothpastes and baked goods. If your furry friend ends up ingesting Xylitol one way or the other, consult your vet immediately.

15. Onions

These awesome crunchy veggies are pretty healthy and delicious for us humans, but they can apparently do more than simply make your pooch’s eyes water. In fact, onions contain harmful compounds that can damage red blood cells in dogs causing them lose strength and become rather weak. If you notice your canine friend is moving around less, it might mean he has found your onion stash.

16. Caffeine

Although dog is man’s best friend, you wouldn’t exactly have a cup of coffee with your pooch. However, it is not uncommon for a dog to, out of curiosity, ingests raw coffee that has been left unattended. Caffeine contains a stimulant known as Methylated xanthine which stimulates the nervous system in your pooch, leading to vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitations, even death.

17. Bacon

Unfortunately for all canines out there, the most awesome thing mankind has created thus far – bacon – is out of reach. In fact, all foods that are rich in fat can lead to the pancreatitis disease which causes their pancreas to become inflamed and stop functioning correctly. So, think twice next time you want to slip your pooch some bacon under the table.

18. Persimmons

This delicious fruit belongs to the Ebenaceae family and even though it is pretty healthy for us, persimmon is pretty bad for your four-legged friend. A certain chemical found in persimmons is known to react with the stomach acid of canines, creating a gluey mass which can obstruct the intestines. Not all dogs are prone to this occurrence, but it’s best to keep persimmons away from your pooch regardless.
